Historie

The churchyard on which this largest bell seat in Friesland stands is perched in a park-like landscape. The first mention of a belfry (with one bell) in Wijnjewoude (formerly Wijnjeterp) dates back to 1723. Records of bells requisitioned by the Germans in 1943 showed that Wijnjeterp had three bells from 1775 onwards. These three bells had been cast in 1768, 1772 and 1822 respectively. In 1984, the belfry that had been rebuilt in 1908 was demolished and rebuilt. Now they are still rung by hand. The three bells sound a kind of Te Deum motive. That this is heavy work is obvious. The largest bell has a diameter of 110 cm. and weighs 867 kg.
