LEARN MORE ABOUT
You are now driving towards the hamlet of De Haar. It is a settlement in ribbon development across a higher sand ridge through the peat from Marum towards the Friesche Palen entrenchment. In the vicinity of Haar, archaeological discoveries have been made from the so-called Clock-Breaker Culture (2500-200 BC) and from the Rope-Breaker Culture (2900-2500 BC,). More information can be found at the Cazemier farm (beginning of the route). On Haarsterweg, there are several national monumental buildings. That is at no. 21 - a retirement home, and at 32 and 34. Haarsterweg has a tragic event during WWII. On 3 May 1943, 16 random civilians were haphazardly arrested and shot on this road. The war victims were eventually reburied in the Marum cemetery, where a memorial has also been erected.
