Historie
Oldenzijl's Dutch Reformed church is located on a small, partly moated mound. The church dates from the first half of the 13th century, the transitional period between Romanesque and Romano-Gothic. It was formerly dedicated to St Nicholas, patron saint of seafarers. The ground plan of the church is a single-nave hall church. On the west side, there is a soaring roof. The village of Oldenzijl owes its name to a lock (= zijl), which was used to discharge excess inland water into the former Fivelboezem
