Historie
Beeldbepalend

A person who led a strike, and spoke on behalf of the workers was the 'appélmeester'. A risky position, as the call master was liable to be arrested, or fired. Women also had to work hard in the peat. So-called drying the peat and loading the peat boats was their main work. Sometimes women also acted as call masters. In Nij Beets and in Appelscha, there are two examples of militant women who led resistance and revolt.
